[Enjoy a kaiseki meal while taking in the sights of national scenic beauty]
This is a luxury inn that uses the mansion and gardens of the Tachibana family, former feudal lords of Yanagawa during the Edo period, as accommodations. The entire mansion has been designated a national scenic spot as “Shotoen Garden.” Inside, the large hall and other rooms remain exactly as they were in the Edo period. Some of the rooms, such as the living room where the family lived, have been converted into private rooms for the restaurant, and you can dine in your room if you make a reservation.
The dishes include “seasonal kaiseki” and “seasonal duck dishes.” They use lavish amounts of seasonal ingredients selected by the head chef, and are presented on beautiful plates along with delicacies from the local Ariake Sea. We decided to enjoy these dishes in the room that was once the residence of Count Tachibana and his family during the Meiji period. Through the glass shoji screens, we could see the vast garden, where migratory birds had arrived to spend the winter. We forgot the passage of time and spent the time relaxing.
Starting in 2020, the inn has begun a plan for guests to take advantage of its location facing the canal and enjoy a leisurely breakfast on a floating boat over the course of more than an hour. This plan has been very well received, as it allows guests to fully enjoy the charms of Yanagawa.
